Christian faith: Calvinism is back / The Christian Science Monitor – CSMonitor.com

Having grown up in the Baptist church, I have to say that I already rejected Calvin a long time ago. I simply don’t have time for all of that hell fire and brimstone crap, especially when it has nothing to do with you when you are already saved. I know I’m going to heaven; what Jesus will decide about me when I attend the White Throne judgment is what my reward will be.

Another issue I have with Calvinism is that Calvin advocated predestination: this is the idea that whether or not we go to heaven has already been decided before we are born. In other words, you don’t decide whether or not you are get saved; God decides this.

This is a lie. Adam and Eve had free will in the garden of Eden, and you have free will now. Christians don’t decide who goes to heaven or hell. They don’t have that power. In fact, although Jesus will sit in judgment of all, He won’t even decide who goes to heaven or hell. Each of us has a choice: whether or not we accept or reject Jesus and His work on the cross.

If you accept Jesus, you are saved. If you don’t, you perish. It really is that simple. Don’t be fooled by this resurgence in Calvinism. Calvinism isn’t the Bible. I want to see a resurgence in people reading their Bibles. That would be news. Only 11 percent read their Bibles on a daily basis.

You don’t need Calvin, the Catechism, a prayer book, or anything else. Just the Bible. Read that, and it will tell you everything you need to know about Jesus, Christianity, God, and faith.
