Getting Rid of the Negative Messages in Your Head

One of the decisions I made after I moved here to Salisbury is that I was going to live my life very differently. When I lived in Atlanta, there wasn’t very much time for any type of life because I was so busy helping my daughter and her husband take care of their little girls.
By the time the day was over, the only thing I wanted to do was go to bed. I was trying to run a business, help take care of my granddaughters, and helping with the housework. I was putting far more into it than I was getting out, and to be honest, it got old.
That’s what happens when there are things that you want for yourself that you’re not getting. I think we all have some form of dissatisfaction in our lives we need to deal with. For me, it was how I was allowing my kids to treat me out of the guilt I felt because of all of the times I failed my kids when they were growing up.
I ended up with a lot of negative messages inside of my head from the experience. I think when we feel too much guilt over our mistakes, we allow others to mistreat us badly. Unfortunately, what often happens is that we let others abuse us because of this guilt.
If you are genuinely sorry for your mistakes, and I was, then what you have to do is ask God for forgiveness. Once you’ve asked for forgiveness, the forgive yourself. Let it go. It may seem hard, but keep doing it until it’s done. If you don’t ask for forgiveness, and you don’t forgive yourself, you’re leaving the door open for even more abuse and your life will never get better.
The problem I had with this was that I kept going back to those “old tapes.” If you live with this kind of negativity long enough, it becomes ingrained. You have to get rid of it. The easiest way to do this is to search your Bible for scripture that disputes whatever negative belief you have.
For example, if you have low self esteem, you need to look at what the Bible actually has to say about it.
(Read Psalm 139. One chapter I like to read is Psalm 91.)
Whatever scriptures you find, read them over and over. Repetition is the key to your success.
This is what I have been doing to get rid of the negative messages inside of my head, and I feel like a different person.
There’s no recession in heaven!
