The Bible not literal?

I was once a religious pluralist. A religious pluralist is one who thinks that there are multiple roads to heaven. They believe that just about any religion  may provide that.

I believed that until I really started studying the Bible to see what it really had to say.

It is unfortunate that many who go to church really never bother to find out what their faith and what the Bible really says. They talk about the Bible in church, but many don’t read it, so they really don’t know what it says.

In my opinion, this is pure laziness on the part of Christians. In fact, it’s pure laziness on the part of any religion.

I will be the first to admit that although they’re on my reading list, I haven’t finished reading the Koran, The Rig Veda, or the writings of Buddha. However, in my search for the truth, I did examine the core beliefs of all of  the major religions.

It wasn’t that hard to discard Judaism. It had been superceded by Christianity, and what Jesus offered was a whole lot more valuable than the 632 laws of the Torah (the first 5 books of the Bible.)

What was interesting about the other religions was their views on heaven. Hinduism and Buddhism really don’t have any. As for Islam, I’m still not sure how women get to heaven, or what they have to do to get there.

Ultimately, what made my decision for me was all of the scholarship on the Bible: the history, the science, and all of the study done to prove the validity of the Bible.

There was also the fact that Christianity was so radically different than other religions. It flew in the face of how people live. It teaches that what the world thinks is important really isn’t important at all.

Christianity is very different in that it is so simple to become a Christian. All you have to do is accept Christ as your savior. Therein lies the problem because it makes things seem too simple.

Where people get in trouble is taking that next step. Yes, we are saved by faith. James told us though that faith without works is dead. If you only accept Christ as your savior, but you never take that next step, then you’ve missed out. You’ve missed out on the life that Christ called us to, a life of abundance.

I encourage you to read your Bible. Know what it says. Some of it is literal: David, Jonah, Noah, Jesus, Paul, James, Jude, and others. Some you need to read for context to understand what it says. However, all of it is the true and inerrant word of God that has been divinely inspired.

Verse of the Day

I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. (Ephesians 4:1-3, ESV)
